Right before Jesus was betrayed and handed over to the Romans to stand “trial” he went to the Garden at Gethsemane to pray. He brought Peter and the sons of thunder (James and John) to stand guard while He prayed.  As you would suspect the disciples were tired from just having a large passover meal and were unable to stay awake.  So, during this time Jesus prays for God’s will to be done in his life three different times. But thats not the point of the story I am sharing with you.  Peter, James, and John kept falling asleep when they should have been standing watch.  As a Marine this behavior disgusts me but Jesus handles it differently. The first time this happens Jesus says “Are you asleep? Can’t you just stand watch for one hour? Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing but the body is weak.” They ignore this advise and fall asleep again, He returns once more and they have nothing to say to Him because they were sleeping again.

What I think Jesus is teaching here is that we are unable to deal with the rigors of life when tempted but if we pray for the willingness of the Spirit we can poise ourselves for true spiritual growth.  The program of recovery using the 12 steps requires hope, open-mindedness, and willingness. This willingness comes in to play in every one of the 12 steps and we must always pray for the willingness to do the work.  When I am a willing participant in my recovery it always brings me growth.

So,  I am not a fan of Russell Brand but I have found this video where he speaks on willingness in recovery. Like Mr. Brand I believe it is essential for change. Check out this weeks video…

The 12 & 12 mentions willingness or being willing 54 times and the Big book mentions them 47 times.  That tells me that the first 100 AA’s wanted us to know how important willingness truly is.  Without this key of willingness we cannot open the door to a new life, a rebirth if you will into living in a way that you could never imagine…

Pray for the blessing of willingness and hang on for the best life God has waiting for you…
